Year 2009/10 in outline
National and international recognition
The Aquaporin membrane technology™ has recently gained considerable international recognition through awards, extensive international press coverage and the allocation of financing from both the Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation, the European Commission and most recently from Environmental and Water Industrial Foundation in Singapore.
Strengthened framework for development
Throughout the year Aquaporin A/S has improved the framework for development of its Aquaporin membrane technology™. This was done through the establishment of new headquarters and development center in Copenhagen, Denmark, and through a new development project at the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
Close cooperation with Singapore
Through the cooperation with the Singapore Membrane Technology Centre, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and DHI Singapore, the foundation for the establishment of Aquaporin Asia has been prepared. This means that Aquaporin A/S has created a solid business model, in which the company can capitalize on knowledge and expertise even before the Aquaporin membrane technology™ is fully developed into a commercial, industrial product.
Extremely favourable patent situation
The patent situation of Aquaporin A/S has developed very satisfactorily with the approval of the company’s first two patent families in Europe and the filing of new patent applications. At the end of the year the first patent family will also be approved in the US and Israel. This very positive development has consolidated the company’s position as the world leader in the development of biomimetic membranes for water filtration and further strengthened its strong IP position in the field.
In the coming year Aquaporin A/S will be developing the Aquaporin membrane technology™ internationally. The company expects to conclude the first strategic partnership agreement on product development with an international industrial partner.
CEO Peter Holme Jensen says: “The Aquaporin Management group is very pleased with the progress we have experienced over the past year. We have created the ideal foundation for completing the development and commercialisation of the Aquaporin membrane technology™ on an international level.”
In 2009/2010 Aquaporin realised a loss (operating profit) of 4.0 million dkr (2008/2009: 2.9 million dkr), which is entirely as expected.
Aquaporin’s capital base was strengthened through the supply of capital from its major shareholder and the company has received financial commitment from the same for the entire 2010/11.
Aquaporin A/S is a 70%-owned subsidiary of the M. Goldschmidt Holding group.
