Aquaporin has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with the Singapore Membrane Technology Center (SMTC). Aquaporin will be establishing a subsidiary in Singapore in close cooperation with DHI and Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

A new collaboration between Aquaporin, the Singapore Membrane Technology Center (SMTC) at Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and DHI Singapore has received a 3 mio USD funding from the Environment and Water Industry Development Council (EWI) in Singapore to support the project ”Aquaporin Based Biomimetic Membranes for Water Reuse and Desalination”. The project fully funds 25 man-years of research and development in Singapore.

”This is a unique opportunity for Aquaporin to establish itself in Asia, which is one of the most interesting markets in terms of introducing new water purification technologies in a collaboration with some of the top experts in the world within membrane technology”, says CEO Peter Holme Jensen, Aquaporin A/S.

Aquaporin and its cooperation partners will be establishing a subsidiary early 2010 in Singapore. Aquaporin A/S will become majority shareholder with approximately 80% whilst DHI and NTU will be minority shareholders. The agreement entails full ownership of all future IPR and know-how generated in the Singapore project to the subsidiary, and moreover creates the foundation for further business development on the attractive Asian market.

Singapore Membrane Technology Center
With the SMTC NTU has provided a coordinated platform from which Singapore’s researchers and other top international experts can work together on developing cutting-edge technologies and applications for purification of water. The center will be led by globally renowned membrane expert, Professor Anthony Fane who says,”We have much to learn from nature’s water transporting aquaporins. The incorporation of aquaporins into synthetic membranes promises a paradigm shift in membrane technology for water purification”.

DHI Singapore
DHI’s Singapore office was established in 2003. DHI is an independent, international consulting and research organisation in the fields of water, environment and health. Aquaporin and DHI already enjoy a long-standing close cooperation on the area in Denmark.
